… and I’m addicted to watching the Olympics.

Seriously. I’ve had an “Olympics hangover” every night since they began, from staying up way too late watching TV. (Thank goodness for “leaded” coffee and hot showers to wake me up!) And what cracks me up is that I now find myself rooting fiercely for athletes whose names I didn’t even know just a week ago! It’s almost like a reality TV show ~ I just can’t seem to turn away. And I laugh at myself because all of the sudden, I’m now an “expert”: “Oh no ~ look, that moguls skier’s knees just came apart for a brief moment!” “Hmm, looks like that figure skater over-rotated her jump a little.” “Wow, that was a nice helicopter, but not as high as the previous guy’s.” Yeah ~ me the couch potato, critiquing the athletes’ techniques! I didn’t know a thing about Vancouver before, either, and now I almost feel like I’ve been there. I’m rooting for the United States, of course, but I also find myself cheering on the Canadian competitors because I’m really excited for them.

And speaking of that ~ wow, do I feel out of shape or what? I’m 5′6″ tall and weigh more than 200 pounds. That’s not good. Most of the female skiers who are around 5′6″ weigh in the 130s. That’s 30 pounds lighter than my goal weight! LOL! :) I just can’t get over how finely tuned their bodies are. They’re at the top of their game. The f igure skaters are all so thin and graceful. I can’t seem to motivate myself to get onto our elliptical machine for 20 minutes, let alone training all day like they do!

And there’s a bit of nostalgia for me, too. I took figure skating lessons for a long time when I was growing up, and I had dreams of competing in the Olympics. (Dream big, right?) Figure skating always came easily to me, even from the first time I stepped out onto the ice. I still love it so much. I remember watching the 1980 Olympics, actually (and I even had an Olympic skating bag!). Who knew that I’d be living relatively close to Lake Placid someday? Back then, I could do lots of spins and jumps ~ but then I was faced with the decision of whether to continue with private coaching or just stop altogether. As a kid, that was a tough choice to make. I opted for a “regular” life. I remember the last time I skated on my hometown’s ice rink. I knew it was probably the last time I’d ever be skating like that. Sad, but I’m awfully glad that I had the experience.

Anyway … my evening ritual is now going downstairs at 8 p.m. with a mug of tea and a good book or knitting in hand to watch the Olympics. Love it. Could Olympics coverage begin at 7 p.m. instead of 8, though, so that maybe I can get some sleep? :)

So far I’ve only watched bits and pieces of the Olympics. Since we can finally get out and about after the snow storms, I haven’t had much desire to sit and watch TV. Maybe I’ll catch some of it tonight.

Vancouver is a lovely city! I hope to go back some day.

Love the Olympics myself. Figure skating is my favorite too.

Don’t beat yourself up about the weight height! You look great:)

I went to British Columbia’s capital Victoria a few years back. I hope to go to Vancouver someday. I miss traveling.

Lisanne, I am RIGHT THERE with you!!!. My DVR has been burning up the Olympics since it started. I’m so behind in my watching, so I’m actually NOT on the right day anymore. I have found that I’m a nut for speedskating, luge, bobsled, and ski jumping. However, unlike my swimming obsession where I have pics of Phelps and Lochte around, I do not have the winter people up … yet. :-) I would LOVE to be in Vancouver right now!!!

I am a big fan of the Olympics. So much fun. But I’m also very frustrated that the coverage is delayed. We are in the same time zone as Vancouver, and not only do we not get it live, but we get it 3 hours delayed behind the EAST coast. I just wish we could see something live for once… stupid media.

I was super excited to watch the Olympics, but keep watching other things instead! So much to watch and so little time. I guess I could DVR one thing or another and watch it later, but it’s just not the same.
