40-day challenge

Is a milkshake considered a beverage or a dessert? I’d love to enjoy a shamrock shake from McDonalds, but I’ve decided to drink only water during Lent. So that’s why I’m asking. It’s all Becka’s fault ~ she even has a photo of a shamrock shake as her Facebook profile photo! :)

I’ve never participated in Lent before, so it’s completely new to me. I’m very proud of myself for not indulging in coffee or pop for the past few days! I’m so addicted to carbonated drinks. It amazes me how many times since Wednesday I’ve gone to the fridge without thinking and opened the door to get a can of pop, realizing that we don’t have any. I also put our coffee maker away. Yesterday, I bought some flavored water to help get me through. And instead of tea, I’ve been heating up a cup of hot water with a few slices of lemon (which is also very soothing). I miss Dunkin’ Donuts’ vanilla chai, but I’m trying not to think about it. I wonder whether I’ll lose any weight by doing this? A girl can hope! :)

Well, I’m off to do some sewing … I’m so excited about making Meredith a St. Patrick’s Day dress. I found some adorable fabric … so let’s hope that it all comes together nicely! I love the sparkly shamrocks!

Ah! Now I understand your question on FB. Wikipedia considers milkshakes “beverages” and the definition by Merriam-Webster is “drink”. However, I’ve never considered McDonald’s “milkshakes” to be real shakes, but that’s what happens when a soda fountain is next to the McDonald’s when you are growing up. To me, though, if you can suck it up through a straw, it’s considered a drink. I say nix the shakes until after Lent and make some good quality peppermint shakes on Easter. :)

I got a Shamrock shake the other day and was so excited about it but honestly… it wasn’t that great. I think they changed the formula. Skip it and like Christina said, indulge in a good one on Easter. (Unless you want to be sneaky… Sundays are considered “feast” days and you can break your fast then. There’s always a loophole, LOL!)

Mom The Enabler says….let’s call it a dessert and enjoy!! But Mom The WW gal says….stick with the water for now at least, then give yourself a reward at the end. Love you and have a good weekend.

OHmigosh, nearly everything you mentioned made my mouth totally water!! Although admittedly, I have cut back on soda a LOT. Two reasons, I *really* like water, and spring water, and even subtly flavoured water too (anything fresh like watermelon and cucumber flavour – LOVE IT), and the other reason is that I stopped drinking diet soda all together, when a blogger friend had a scare with MS, (multiple sclerosis) and her doctor told her that aspartame* is a huge culprit in early onset MS, or MS symptoms.

*aspartame – artificial sweetener found in 99% of diet sodas!!!

Let me know how it goes, if you lose weight, if your skin/hair changes, etc. I’m a HUGE wateraholic, but I still drink the occassional coffee, diet coke, etc. Mostly thought it’s water water water!

Growing up Catholic Lent was always there and as kids we gave up stuff like chocolate and being mean, always ate fish on Fridays (yum Captain D’s!), and looked forward to Easter Sunday when the church was decorated up with flowers (to me it really meant Spring had arrived). This year for lent I am “giving up giving up things for lent” as one of my coworkers stated. Instead of giving up something, I opted to really spend time on getting healthy. So far, I’ve discovered that I’m now really never truly starving, that the iPod is the best invention for someone stuck on a bike at the gym, and I’m spending less time mindlessly snacking. I still look forward to Easter when the snow has melted, flowers are starting to spring forward, and my health change shocks my doctor :-) Good luck on all water! I’m sure you can do it.

Well… if you go to Red Robin, they are thick like an ice cream dessert. McD’s… they seem more drink-ish. But just think… you may get through Lent and realize that you don’t need the shakes or coffee. Personally, I’ve been told to cut out the caffiene, and it’s going to be very difficult for me. I’m trying to drink more water, too.

    Good luck!

Hi Lisanne! I just had a shamrock shake the other day, it was yummy! I am going to try to limit myself to just a few this year. I guess I would consider them a drink, but the choclate shake I had at Red Robin over the weekend was very thick, so that was more of a dessert.
