Yum, yum, yum … delicioso

Lucas definitely needs a new backpack for kindergarten.

For his first year of preschool, we bought him a “Cars” backpack that was small and easy for him to carry (and he picked it out all on his own, at Target). It was preschool-size and perfect for getting him used to carrying a backpack to and from school. Last year, though, the preschool teachers requested larger backpacks to hold more (and larger) items ~ so we went to Wal-Mart. Lucas picked out a solid red one, and it was cheap ~ about $3 or $5, if I remember correctly! It was much larger and served its purpose. I knew that he would have a different backpack when he went off to kindergarten anyway.

Well, here we are ~ doing some back-to-school shopping already! We got a Land’s End catalog in the mail the other day, and Lucas had fun looking at all the backpacks. I know that they’re good quality. I want something that isn’t going to fall apart within a short amount of time. His favorite color is blue, and he immediately picked out the “Alpine Blue” one (above). It’s recommended for ages five to eight, so hopefully it meets the requirements for the “oversized backpack” that the primary school is requesting! (If not, I’m sure that we can return it and get the “200″ version.) Shipping was free, too, so you can’t beat that!

We also bought him the matching lunchbox, which supposedly keeps foods cold for up to five hours (I have no idea when his lunch period will be). The bag will also be great for the playground, camping trips, vacations, etc. I had it embroidered with his name so that he’ll find it easily (and in case someone else has the same lunchbox). Normally, I always stay away from kids’ items displaying their name (for security reasons), but I think this will be a big help for him.

The primary school is also requesting beach towels for the students, for their rest time. Here’s the one that I picked out for Lucas, and I hope that he’ll be OK with it:

He loves blue (it’s his current favorite color!). And I had his name embroidered on it, too. I thought it would be nice to choose a towel without “characters” on it so that he will get lots of use from it in the years to come. (He loves “Star Wars” right now, but who knows … he could be into something different next year.) I know that this towel won’t shrink or pill or tear or wear out after a small amount of use, too.

Have I mentioned how much I *love* school-supplies shopping? :)

When NHL started first grade last year he needed a new backpack. I looked at Lands End and L.L. Bean. I ended up going with L.L. Bean because he fell in love with it, I loved their warranty and my in-laws were able to get it monogrammed for free. JSL is going to nursery school and needed one for him. My SIL got him the same backpack as NHL, but the smaller size with a matching lunch bag. I hope Lucas gets many years and memories out of his new bags :)

I love his (and your) choices! I can’t believe he’s headed to Kindergarten already. And I love school shopping too. I can’t wait to do it next year for Isabella. Unfortunately, we only have 1/2 day Kindergarten here, so no lunch box selection for two more years. ;)

I guess it’s just me, but I can’t believe kindergarten kids need backpacks! What in the world do they carry in them?

Christina – A LOT of artwork and papers come home from school. At least in our school district, instead of trusting that the kids carry the papers by hand and give them to the parents, teachers put everything in a folder that goes in the backpack. Plus, the lunchbox fits in there and anything that needs to be brought home for special projects. You’d be surprised! :-)

Our kids needed backpacks for *preschool* ~ but I think that was mainly to get them used to carrying a backpack and taking it to/from school. Although, they did bring some things home on occasion. (Moreso in the four-year-olds’ class.) I love how the lunchbox will fit in there (it also has clips to clip onto the outside of the backpack). I don’t remember if I had a backpack or bag for kindergarten.
